Digital printing Methods like laser and ink-jet printing are known as digital printing. In digital printing, an image is sent directly to the printer using digital files such as PDFs and from InDesign softwares like Illustrater. This wipe out the need for a printing plate, which is used in offset printing, which can save money as well as time too.Without the need to create a plate, digital printing has brought printing on demand. Instead of having to print large, pre-determined runs, requests can be made for as little as one print. While offset printing still often results in slightly better quality prints, digital methods are being worked on at a fast rate to improve quality and lower costs.
Electrostatic printing A process where toner sticks to a charged drum and is thermally fused on to a page, like photocopying is good for very short printing runs. This is a process of printing without contact, without a typeform, and without ink.In this process the paper is coated with a thin layer of zinc oxide, making it an insulator in the dark and simultaneously a conductor of electricity when exposed to light. For example These type of machines are used for printing of geographic maps.
Embossing Embossing is the process of creating a three-dimensional image or design in paper and other ductile materials. It is typically accomplished with heat and pressures which reshapes the surface of the paper to create the image. This is a special printing process that makes an impression into thick paper over printed type or a design.
Flexography A process which utilizes a flexible relief plate that can be fitted to a printing cylinder.Which is basically an updated version of letterpress. This is much more versatile than letterpress in that it can be used to print packaging materials.Flexography is used to print corrugated containers, folding cartons, multiwall sacks, paper sacks, plastic bags, milk and beverage cartons, disposable cups and containers, labels, adhesive tapes, envelopes, newspapers, and wrappers (candy and food).
Gravure printing This is an expensive but high quality printing technique that uses direct contact between an etched copper plate and the paper. While the plate has a relatively high cost, this technique is the best way to print high quality magazines, annual reports and mail order catalogues.Gravure is a high quality printing process capable of producing printed images which have a continuous tone effect similar to a photograph.
Letterpress printing Letterpress is the oldest method of printing with equipment. In this process the printed image is produced from a plate in which the image area is slightly raised above the non-image surface of the plate (like a rubber stamp).Letterpress printing involves locking movable type into the bed of a press, inking it, and rolling or pressing paper against it to form an impression.
